Derby & Jackson, 1859-01-01. Leather Bound. Very Good. New York: Derby & Jackson. (400 pp.) [19] leaves of plates: ill. 29 cm. Folio. Leather bound. Fully restored, with repairs to binding, spine and boards, and weather treatment lacquer applied to cover. Fully bound in beautiful crimson pigmented calf-skin leather with ornately blind-embossed, patterned boards. Borders consist of intricate, interwoven gilt lines. 5 raised bands. 6 compartments. Gilt decorative flourishes within compartments. Title stamp on upper spine. Tight binding and solid boards. Minimal shelf wear. Slight bumping to corners. Minor scuffing to edges. Visible cracks along upper spine connoting where repairs have been made. Light sunning to edges of spine. Gilt borders inside boards. Multi-colored swirl design on endpapers. Dark brown repair tape has been applied to gutters. Minor damp-stain to FFEP. Slight darkening to spots on preliminary pages leading to title page. Slight, minimal splotching throughout volume. Minor damp-staining to lower corner of pages 123 through 130. Frontispiece is a steel-plate engraved black and white portrait of Semiramis. 18 additional engravings are included within the volume. This gorgeous and interesting compilation, published in 1858 by Derby and Jackson brings together some of history's most significant females, including such figures as Joan of Arc, Anne Boleyn, and Pocahontas. Biographies are provided, as well as excerpts from poetry and classic literature. An exceptional addition to the library of any historian.
