About This Item

New York: The Century Co, 1913. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 5.5". None. The first American edition of Edmund Bentley's detective fiction novel 'Trent's Last Case'. Issued under the title 'The Woman in Black'. Although the title of the English edition noted the work as his last case, this is actually the first Bentley novel to feature the amateur detective Philip Trent. The novel is noted for the fact it is a whodunit that rests firmly in the detective fiction genre. Many critics regard this novel to be the first of its kind. This novel was so successful it received praise from many noted authors of the genre including G.K Chesterton and Agatha Christie. Christie regarded this novel to be one of the three best detective stories ever written. The first American edition of this work. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Scattered spots to the first and last few pages. Otherwise, just the odd spots to pages. Very Good
