About This Item
Frankfurt, Germany: Fischer, S., 2015. Hardcover. New/Near Fine. Roberto Parada (Illustrator). Text/NEW & Bright; German Language. Blue boards/Fine. DJ/NF w/faint creasing to upper back edge. Wie wir älter werden : Roman (As We Get Older: Novel) is a story of two entangled families whose lives are fated to separate but to meet again. With deft, the author relates individual passages over different periods of time & places, of many protagonists. The tale begins on a snowy morning. As he does daily at this time, 87-year-old Jacques prepares lunch for himself and his wife Friederike. In the past, he had lived for 9 years with childhood sweetheart Helena before re-joining his wife. Jacques & Friederike, Helena & her husband Emil promised to keep their lips sealed on these happenings. Their pact naturally shaped the lives of their children & grandchildren, but does, eventually, begin to fray. So, beyond the foursome, the narrative is that of several generations (from World War II to contemporary days) whose perspectives & values differ considerably. A novel of love & betrayal, of evolving philosophical views the very process of living within a changing world order. 272 pgs.
