About This Item
London : Putnam & Co., (1942). First edition in English of "Vinter-Eventyr" - a collection of eleven short stories on themes suggested by occupied Denmark - themes of courage and resilience, pride and shame, freedom and death, etc. Includes "The Invincible Slave Owners", "The Heroine", "Sorrow-Acre", etc. "All the greatest works of art are allegorical in the sense that they imply more than they state, and illuminate human nature everywhere" (L. P. Hartley reviewing the book in The Sketch, 21st April 1943). Post 8vo (21cm). 290,[ii]pp. Original red cloth, lettered in gilt; some faint spotting of edges, but a very good, bright and sound copy in the Robin Darwin dust-jacket - the jacket price-clipped, a touch darkened and slightly spotted, but with only very minor wear, a couple of nicks and single short tear, and also very good, particularly for a book produced under wartime conditions. Contemporary ownership inscription of Frances Christie.
