Issued as a limited edition of 600 copies. Analysis of one work by English painter Francis Cotes (1726-1770): his portrait of William Earle Welby (1734-1815), of Denton, Lincolnshire and his first wife, Penelope (1737-1771), playing chess, before a draped curtain. "One of the most enchanting of late eighteenth-century marriage portraits. More than that, it is the first known chess-playing portrait in British art, unique among society paintings."
