About This Item

(Cape Town, Tafelberg, 1971). Pictorial dustwrapper, lightly worn, pp. 125 + (1), plates. Text edges very slightly foxed. 'In the years immediately following the Great War, Major-General W.G. Salmond, officer commanding the R.A.F. in the Middle East theatre during the war, set out to make his dream of Cairo as a great centre for Empire air routes come true. This was a time when commercial passenger lines were still only an idea. In 1918 he flew himself from England to India. Less than a year later Ross and Keith Smith flew to Australia. Only one route remained to be pioneered - the flight from the top to the bottom of the Dark Continent.' .
