About This Item
London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1933. First edition of Yeats' classic work. Octavo, original cloth with gilt titles and tooling to the spine, front panel stamped in blind. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket which is in very good condition. The title of this volume refers to the staircase in the Thoor Ballylee castle which Yeats purchased and resided in with his family for some time. Yeats saw the castle as a vital connection to the aristocratic Irish past which he adored. The phrase "winding stair" is used in the book's third poem, "A Dialogue of Self and Soul", which depicts the confrontation of Yeats' soul with his self.
