About This Item

London: Thomas Nelson and Sons, 1909. Leather. Very Good. 6.5" by 4.5". Not Stated. Richard Jefferies's guide to the wildlife of Wiltshire, England, with particular emphasis on birds. A later edition of this work in a quarter vellum binding and cloth boards, with gilt detailing to the spine. Top edge gilt. Richard Jefferies (1848-1887) was an English nature writer, notable for his depiction of English rural life in essays, natural history books, and novels. His work was greatly influenced by his childhood, which was spent on a small Wiltshire farm. In this work, Jefferies provides a guide to the wildlife of Wiltshire, in its villages, farmhouses, orchards, woodlands, fields, and lakes, and also on the Wiltshire Downs. He gives particular mention to bird life, with passages devoted to starlings, rooks and rookeries, migration, and wildfowl. In a quarter vellum binding. Externally, generally smart, with a mark to the front board. The boards are a little bowed. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with offsetting to the end papers and to the half title page. Very Good
