Fergus, the award-winning author of "One Thousand White Women," set his second novel in the Depression Era in the American Southwest as Ned Giles, an easterner and orphan, joins the Great Apache Expedition of 1932, which is seeking the Apache band that has kidnapped the son of a wealthy Mexican landowner. The Expedition's objective is compromised when it discovers an Apache girl in a Mexican jail. Her family killed, the girl refuses to speak or eat and is slowly starving to death. Giles finds himself faced with a decision that will haunt the rest of his life. First Printing, First Edition. A variant binding that appears to be a presentation copy. Instead of usual dustjacket, the dustjacket pictorial images have been bonded directly to the boards under a hard, glossy finish. About 6 3/8 x 9 1/4 inches, 355 pages including Author's and Bibliographical Notes. Boards and text are clean, complete, and unmarked. No tears, no chipping, creasing or bumping. Collectable.
