About This Item
St Martin's/Marek, New York, 1984. Second Impression. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. Signed by Author. 300 g; VIII, 152 pages, last page blank, with illustrated dust jacket. The top edge and front edge of the text block showed faint signs of foxing. There appears to be an imperfection in the binding at the top left-hand corner of the rear panel when viewed from the inside, and there is also foxing to the front and rear paste downs. The inscription reads "for a Charleston refugees. Come home. Come home." And signed by the author. For 50 years a man has borne the blame for one friend's death and another's disappearance. Why We Never Danced the Charleston is a kind of murder mystery, but one in which the mysteries multiply and I never resolved. And it is through the unfolding of these mysteries the Charleston comes alive. This is a story of love and its corruption, of guilt, obsession, and belief, and that deadly effects of sexual repression. But it is also a literary novel, set within the Southern Gothic tradition by a young writer whose masterful use of detailed conjures up a vanished world so completely that it seems some trick of sorcery. This is the author's first novel. Please note that the title page and bears a facsimile signature included as part of the printing process. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
