About This Item

Cambridge: Polity Press, 2011. Paperback small octavo, very good plus condition, minor edgewear. 229 pp. James Gilligan, an American psychiatry professor, has undertaken a lifetime study of violence in American society. After examining data readily available to the public from non-partisan sources, he was surprised to find (up to the year 2010) that levels of violence (gun deaths, suicides, etc.) were usually higher during Republican presidencies compared to Democrat presidencies. Feasible explanations include the higher tolerance of gun ownership among Republicans, and the increased social inequalities and economic recessions that eventuate during Republican administrations (economic policies that favour the wealthy).
