PAPERBACK. Very Good.

Synopsis

“Twelve times a week,” answered Uta Hagen, when asked how often she’d like to play Martha in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Like her, audiences and critics alike could not get enough of Edward Albee’s masterful play. A dark comedy, it portrays husband and wife George and Martha in a searing night of dangerous fun and games. By the evening’s end, a stunning, almost unbearable revelation provides a climax that has shocked audiences for years. With the play’s razor-sharp dialogue and the stripping away of social pretense, Newsweek rightly foresaw Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? as “a brilliantly original work of art—an excoriating theatrical experience, surging with shocks of recognition and dramatic fire [that] will be igniting Broadway for some time to come.”

Reviews

On Apr 28 2014, a reader said:
A young and handsome new-hire college professor Nick, and his mousey wife Honey, are invited to the home of the dull head of the history dept. George, after hours, post campus event (unbeknownst to George) by George's sexy 40 something wife, Martha. Believing the visit will enhance young Nick's career, (Martha is the daughter of the college's president) they accept the invitation, unaware they are in for a disturbing night of non stop drinking, leading to shocking behavior by their hosts, and themselves. Stunning ending! A classic play, made into a movie in the 1960's, starring famous real life husband and wife Liz Taylor and Richard Burton, a young George Segal and Sandy Dennis. I found reading the play much more disturbing than the movie, which tends to be softened a bit by lovely Liz. I have not yet seen the actual play performed-but I must, someday!
