Charles Scribner's Sons; New York 1943. Blue hardcover with NO dust jacket. Later edition with 1943 on the title page. This is not a first edition copy since the letter "A" is not indicated on the copyright page.

**PLEASE NOTE** this book does have some smells of smoke from previous owners. If you are highly sensitive to smoke we do not recommend purchasing this book.

Notes on Condition: This book has some wear from age and use. The front cover has some stains and signs of fading and the back cover has been bumped in the upper left corner. The textblock and top and bottom edges have some signs of wear and use. The pages are in decent condition with a few minor stains and creases. There are no known tears, writitng or highlights in the book.

Synopsis

For Whom the Bell Tolls is a novel by Ernest Hemingway published in 1940. It tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to an anti-fascist guerilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As an expert in the use of explosives, he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia. This novel is widely regarded to be among Hemingway's greatest works, along with The Sun Also Rises, The Old Man and the Sea, and A Farewell to Arms.
