New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1945. Hardcover. 8vo. Blue cloth. viii, 308pp, (4pp). Very good. Frontispiece, illustrations, map endpapers. Mildly edgeworn, with spine lettering quite rubbed. A tight and nice later (24th) printing of this 1940 novel about a G.I. who contracts leprosy in the Philippines and ends up in a leper colony -- winner of the National Book Award's "Bookseller Discovery Award." Tipped to inner flyleaf is a printed "Presented by the author bookplate transmitting this copy to Congressman William A. Brown, signed boldly by Burgess in blue ink. Burgess (1886-1962) was a Missouri minister, author and leprosy authority.
