London: William Pickering, 1844. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 7" by 5". Unnamed. A scarce first edition copy of this English translation of two famous romantic German tales, 'The White Lady' and 'Undine'. Translated into English by C L Lyttelton, 'The White Lady' and 'Undine' are two well known stories by German writers Karoline von Woltmann and Friedrich de la Motte Fouque. 'Undine' is La Motte Fouque's most notable work and is a fairy-tale in which Undine, a water spirit, marries a knight named Huldebrand in order to gain a soul. 'The White Lady' is a story based upon the legend of the White Lady Ghost, said to haunt castles of several European aristocratic families. Featuring a bookplate of a 'Henry Lloyd Gibbs' tipped to the front pastedown. In a lovely half polished calf binding with marbled paper boards, and endpapers. Pages slightly age toned to extremities but very bright and clean, with the odd spot, heavier to first and last few pages. Marking to page 89 'Undine', slightly offset to facing page. Very Good Indeed
