About This Item
White-Jacket (A Narrative Of Adventures In The South Seas), Melville Herman, Dana Estes & Company, Boston, Circa 1892-1900.
1/4 leather and marbled blue boards. Top edges gilt, other edges deckled. Five raised bands, with gilt floral designs in four compartments. Gilt titles: Works Of Melville followed by Title and Edition Deluxe at Foot. Illus frontis with tissue guard; additional photogravure plates from drawings by Henry Austin, Burnham Shute and W.H. Overend. Preface by Arthur Stedman. Title page in black and red with Illustrated Sterling Edition top. Copyright page states Elizabeth S. Melville, 1892. There are no other dates and no ads. Dana Estes and Co. did publish editions of Omoo and White Jacket in 1892 (one year after Melville's death). This may have been published a few years later; perhaps 1900 as in this year this board style was also used by Dana Estes for works by Dickens, Scott and Thackeray. Volume in beautiful condition internally with no marks of any kind, tears or folded pages. Binding is firm and volume is square and tight. Spine intact but unglued; front board remains attached.
