About This Item

London: Cassell, 1938. 263 pp, 8vo (8 5/16" H). "This volume follows the author's 'Leaves From a Surgeon's Case-Book', which has had outstanding success. In its twenty chapters it emphasises the advances of the last few years in surgical methods, and the value of newly discovered ways of treatment, in a manner readily followed by the layman. It explains what science is doing for the alleviation of pain; the minimising of risk in even major operations; the vastly improved chances of cure and recovery, and in it all inspires confidence by removing fear. Many examples are given of the ever-increasing victories accruing from laboratory research and the patient observation of results in practice. It reads like a benign romance. The author, a famous surgeon writing under a nom-de-plume, has produced a timely book, of engrossing interest in its encouraging story of surgical and medical progress." Contemporary Christmas gift inscription on front free endpaper, book is cocked, light browning on free endpapers, light browning to pages, heavy browning on pages 26 & 27 due to laid-in advertisement card - migrates into adjacent pages, small double crease at top corner of pages 237 to 230, moderate browning to edges of text block, 'old paper' odour, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light shelf soiling on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has moderate to heavy browning - heaviest on spine and flap-folds, several small chips and edge tears, light edgewear/wrinkling, two small water marks on spine.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/Good.
