New York: McGraw-Hill, 1964. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing. Hardcover. Good/Fair. 19 cm. 126, [2] pages. DJ worn and soiled, small tears and chips to DJ edges. Barry Morris Goldwater (January 2, 1909 - May 29, 1998) was an American politician, businessman, and author who was a five-term Senator from Arizona (1953-1965, 1969-1987) and the Republican Party nominee for president of the United States in 1964. Despite his loss of the 1964 presidential election in a landslide, Goldwater is the politician most often credited with having sparked the resurgence of the American conservative political movement in the 1960s. He also had an impact on the libertarian movement. His views grew more libertarian as he reached the end of his career. A significant accomplishment of his career was the passage of the Goldwater-Nichols Act of 1986. John McCain, praised him as the man who "transformed the Republican Party from an Eastern elitist organization to the breeding ground for the election of Ronald Reagan." The leading conservative thinker details the platform that would help him to carry exactly six states in the 1964 presidential election. This work is a candid and forceful discussion of the most challenging issues that confronted American and Americans in 1964. Senator Goldwater here states clearly, concisely, and vigorously his positions on the most crucial problems of our time. He discusses his views on the United States as the responsible leader of the free world, defense strategy, civil rights, Federalism and states rights, the nuclear test ban treaty, the income tax, social security, education, agriculture, labor-management relations, the Tennessee Valley Authority, fiscal responsibility, aid to Communist countries, foreign aid, foreign trade, recognition of the Soviet Union, the United Nations, Cuba, Southeast Asia, N.A.T.O., and summit meetings.
