Boston: Dana Estes and Company, Publishers., [1893]. First Edition (& 1st printing). Octavo, original light brown cloth stamped in dark brown and gold. 210 pp. frontispiece with tissue guard, eleven additional full page plates inserted within the text. Ink inscription on front free endpaper "To Katherine from Ruth Teal Aug 1908", later name "Joanna Hagar" in pencil on the same leaf. Light rubbing to gilt lettering on spine panel; a very good, bright copy. Uncommon.
¶ Laura Elizabeth Howe Richards (1850-1943), American writer, author of over 90 children's books. She was the daughter of Julia Ward Howe, abolitionist, social activist & suffragette, composer of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE is Laura's reminiscences of her childhood years with her family. This copy was previously owned by Joanna Hagar who, along with her husband Barney, ran Poor Richard's Bookshop in Victoria, BC for many years.
