London: R. MacDonald, 1850. Soft Cover. Good to Very Good. 16mo. Complete with 90 pages, 4 folding illustrations, and 1 advertising leaf. Original green wrapper. Sound binding. Clean pages with dampstains and dog-ears. Legible, but heavily rubbed and edgeworn cover.
An early traveler's guide to Paris that not only addresses the city's sights, public buildings, and exhibitions, but also provides information about its hackney coaches, cabs, ominbuses, railway stations, money, cafes, restaurants, theatres, churches, postal system, and much more.
In 1848, London was visited by a delegation of several hundred members of the French National Guard who took the city by storm with their good manners, general interest, and exceptional friendliness. At a farewell dinner, hosted by the Honorable Artillery Company, the Frenchmen openly expressed their thanks and publically stated "an earnest desire that it might not be long ere they should enjoy the pleasure of a visit in return from the honest citizens of London. Within a year, a semi-official excursion of 300 Londoners visited Paris, and one of the travelers published this guide.
