About This Item

Englewood, CO, 1951. Magazine. Eight issues of the newspaper founded by the fundamentalist preacher Harvey H. Springer of the First Baptist Church of Englewood; all with horizontal fold; evenly toned, occasional minor closed edge tears; several have "Pro-Nazi" or "Native Fascist" penciled in the corner by the original recipient. Issues present are vol. 7 nos. 7, 8; vol. 9 nos. 3, 20; vol. 10 no. 24; vol. 11 nos. 39, 40; and vol. 13 no. 30. Also included is a printed letter to subscribers from 1960, lamenting the election of JFK, "the first Roman Catholic to ever occupy the White House," and urging the reader to help build the Western Voice as a mouthpiece for Protestantism. The founder was a fiery anti-communist, anti-Catholic and pro-segregation preacher, though he had fewer problems with Jews as long as they converted.
