About This Item

Glendale, CA: Arthur H. Clark Company, 1974. Book. Very good+ condition. Hardcover. First Edition. Octavo (8vo). 254 pages of text, including illustrations and portraits. Hardcover binding with minimal shelfwear. Printed on Bookcraft paper. 1613 copies printed. Western Fronteirsman Series XV. From Clark #122 "John Simpson Smith was a rather enigmatic figure in the west. An early fur trapper, he spent his entire life on the frontier. He greeted the first settlers on Cherry Creek, what is now Denver, and entertained Louis Garrard, who later introduced him to the national reading public in "Wah-To-Yah and Taos Trail" (1848). He became familiar enough to have his picture in Harper's Magazine, and a listing in the Encyclopedia Brittanica. He was witness to the Sand Creek massacre and testified in the hearing s of that event. Unfortunately, he left no personal account of his life and this biography, though thorough, lacks the intimacy that one might wish for regarding such an interesting character.".
