"These lectures on ‘The Essence of Christianity' by the then professor of church history at Berlin University were received with an enthusiasm unparalled for centuries in the field of religious pamphleteering. They proclaimed the fundamental concord of the tenets of the early Church as preserved in the non-Roman churches with the religious aspirations, the intellectual climate and the social and economic morality of the twentieth century; and innumerable reprints and translations broadcast this message of liberal Protestantism all over the world. He was a co-founder and for many years the president of the Evangelic-Social Congress (1890) which brought together theologians, politicians and economists interested in the problems of social welfare...As director-general of the Prussian state library (1905-21) he initiated the work of the union catalogue of the German libraries as well as the international ‘Catalogue of Incunabula' (Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke)" (Printing and the Mind of Man).
