Bound in forest green half morocco backed marble boards with gilt ruling, gilt titles on five-banded spine, and t.e.g. Marble endpapers with handsome bookplate of heiress Gustavia Senff on upper pastedowns; lightly bumped lower corner but otherwise a near fine copy. First American edition. Etched frontispiece with tissue guard by H. Macbeth-Raeburn and map of Wessex at end. 8vo. Hardy's last novel to be published in book form, it appeared serially in the Illustrated London News at the end of 1892. Purdy pp 92-96
Synopsis
Jocelyn Pierston, a sculptor of growing fame, is determined to find his ideal in womanhood, a quest that has led to many fruitless encounters. For just as it seems he has found his heart's desire, disillusionment sets in and his burning love turns to ashes. Returning to Portland, his birthplace, he meets young, innocent Avice Caro. They are betrothed until a fateful meeting with the self-assured Marcia Bencomb changes the course of his life yet again.
