About This Item

London, United Kingdom: Faber and Faber, 1989 UNCORRECTED ADVANCE PROOFS FOR THE CASED EDITION (on front cover states "probable publication date 4 September 1989"). Prepublication First Edition. Blue soft cover. 330pp. Clean text pages with no internal markings. Anthology of tales of love lost and found, letters on marriage and fatherhood, together with reflections on cigarette-smoking, baseball and the perils of nearsightedness, including six new pieces - some of the selections were written for The New Yorker. Keillor states that the stories are "at the time of Ronald Reagan, the President who never told bad news to the American people". Garrison Keillor is an American storyteller, humourist, columnist, satirist and radio personality. The host of "A Prairie Home Companion" on the Minnesota Public Radio Show - heard in Britain on BBC 7 "Garrision Keillor's Radio Show". He wrote and appeared in Robert Altman's final film, A Prairie Home Companion and is the author of many books including "Lake Wobegan Days". The hardcover edition is now out of print.

Synopsis

“Garrison Keillor made it possible, after twenty years of black humor…to be both funny and nice, hip and winsome, scathing and loving, all in the flick of a single many-barbed quip—— The Washington Post Book World “Keillor’s literary style is as flexible and assured as his vocal delivery. It can slip from mood to mood so subtly and quickly you’re never quite sure where you are…. [His] writing has the silvery slip of running water, so graceful and easy it’s hard to believe it can carry so much that is jagged and unresolved. His integrity lies in his not smoothing away those rough edges in the swift current of his prose; they’re bruisingly, sometimes cuttingly there.” — The Village Voice
