About This Item

Brookline, Massachusetts: David R. Godine, [1972]., [1972].. Good. - A 31 inch high by 22 inch wide broadside printed on heavy cream "cartridge paper made by Schut". The broadside is illustrated with a 19-1/2 inch high by 20 inch wide soft-hued photogravure portrait of Walt Whiman printed by Joh. Enschede. The image portrays the long white bearded Whitman from the chest up bundled in a textured blanket or heavy cloak. The text, quoted from Whitman's "Democratic Vistas", reads: "We have frequently printed the word democracy. Yet I cannot too often repeat that it is a word the real gist of which still sleeps, quite unawaken'd, notwithstanding the resonance and the many angry tempests out of which its syllables have come, from pen or tongue. It is a great word, whose history, I suppose, remains unwritten, because that history has yet to be enacted. It is, in some sort, younger brother of another great and often-used word, NATURE, whose history also waits unwritten. Walt Whitman". The first line is printed in sienna-colored capital letters above the lowercase black text reproduced from calligraphy by Bram De Does. Credits printed along the bottom read: "Published by David R. Godine, 282 Newton Street, The Barn, Brookline, Massachusetts 02146 / Printed in Photogravure by Joh. Enschede en Zonen, Haarlem, Holland, on a Cartridge Paper made by Schut, Heelsum, Holland / Calligraphy by Bram De Does". There is a horizontal line of dampstaining at bottom below the text and some minor horizontal creasing from rolling. There are otherwise only minor creases to the edges. Good.
