Per questo volume, Templeton ha selezionato fotografie che non rientrano nel suo solito modo di organizzare per tema o soggetto. Nelle pubblicazioni passate organizzava il suo lavoro in raggruppamenti semplici come Teenage Kissers, Teenage Smokers, o fotografie scattate da un'auto in movimento (come nel suo libro The Seconds Pass). In Deformer ha presentato le fotografie raggruppandole sotto il tema della periferia. Wayward Cognitions rappresenta i momenti intermedi, quando si scatta per le strade senza tema o soggetto. "Si tratta di guardare, guardare la gente, trovare piacere nelle vignette visive che intravediamo ogni giorno", dice Templeton. Quando quei momenti vengono rimossi dal contesto in cui sono stati scattati, si possono raccontare o immaginare storie dinamiche in forma di libro. Le fotografie in Wayward Cognitions sono state stampate da Templeton nella sua camera oscura; ha poi creato lui stesso il layout e il design, costruendo il libro da zero nel suo studio di casa.
