In order for the listener to understand and appreciate music more completely, the author spends considerable time on the constructive elements of the art: melody, harmony, rhythm, form and style. He describes and explains various musical instruments and their use, then explores music of historical periods: the Medieval Period, 600-1450; The Renaissance Period, 1450-1600; Baroque, 1600-1750; Classic Period, 1750-1827; Romantic Period, 1827-1900; and the Modern Period. viii, 630 pages with bibliography and index. 9.5 x 6.25 inches.
