About This Item
Historical novel.
Paraphrased from Wikipedia: Edward Waverley, a young English gentleman joins the army just before the Jocobite uprising of 1745.er. On leave from army training, he visits friends of his family in Scotland, and finds himself in the midst of loyalists who support the return of the House of Stuart and the Stuart prince, known as Bonnie Prince Charlie. His honour is often challenged as others interfere to push him to the Stuart side, where he is in battle, and he meets two women with whom he falls in love in turn, until he chooses one. His gentlemanly actions gain him friends in this precarious situation, on both sides of the uprising, who stand him in good stead when he is at risk from his own government when the uprising is put down.
This book has a text "Advertisement" in the front, then a General Preface, then an Appendix to General Preface, then an Infroduction to Waverley, then Preface to the Third Edition, then Chapter 1 of Waverly, at the end there is Notes to Waverly
Fair condition. Dark blue cloth with stylized tree impressed with gold gilt and the title in a block. Gilt is also on the spine. Edges and corners have some wear. Front has a little soiling and some stains. End papers have dark spots probably due to acid in the paper. Previous owner's name is on one end paper. There is gold gilt on the top of the closed book pages and the edge is darkened with a few tiny spots. The book pages are mostly clean, but a few have small corner creases. The text is clean and the binding is good.
418 pages.
