Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1859. Leather. Good Only. 6.5" by 4.5". Various. Four of Scott's popular Waverley novels in uniform fine bindings. Comprising: Volume XII, entitled 'Kenilworth'; Volume XIII, entitled 'The Pirate'; Volume XIX, containing 'The Betrothed' (part of the 'Tales of the Crusaders' series) and 'The Highland Widow' (part of the 'Chronicles of the Canongate' series); and Volume XXII, entitled 'Saint Valentine's Day: Or, the Fair Maid of Perth' (part of the 'Chronicles of the Canongate' series). Each volume has a frontispiece. In half leather bindings with marbled boards. Externally, rubbed, with slight loss. Marbled board covering of Volume XXII missing. Front hinge of Volume XXII failed. Rear hinge of Volume XIII held by one cord only. One hinge strained, and one slightly strained. Internally, generally firmly bound. Page 365-366 of Volume XII is detached and missing. Marginal tidemarks throughout, with occasional light foxing prominent to first and last few pages, and marks. Ink signature to front blank of Volume XIII. Good Only

Synopsis

The Waverley Novels are a long series of novels by Sir Walter Scott, a Scottish writer and historian. For nearly a century, they were among the most popular and widely read novels in all of Europe. Scott did not publicly acknowledge authorship until 1827, causing the series to take its name from Waverley, the first novel of the series published in 1814. The later books bore the words "by the author of Waverley" on their title pages. The Tales of my Landlord sub-series was not advertised as "by the author of Waverley" and as a result not always included as part of the Waverley Novels series.
