About This Item
London: Macmillan and Co., 1885 . Cloth. Very Good. 8.5" by 7". Linley Sambourne. A beautifully bound early edition of Charles Kingsley's lovely children's novel with illustrations by Linley Sambourne. Early edition of The Water-Babies A Fairy Tale for a Land-Baby by Charles Kingsley. In the original publisher's blue cloth binding with bright and decorative gilt to the front board and spine. A new edition, with one hundred in-text illustrations by Edward Linley Sambourne, an English cartoonist and illustrator best remembered for being a draughtsman for the satirical magazine Punch. The Water-Babies is a children's novel first published in Macmillan's Magazine. It was a satirical take in support of Darwin's theory of evolution. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, very smart. There is some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. The hinges are starting but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with the odd spot. Very Good
