About This Item

First Edition, Fourth Printing (October 1991) of the highly acclaimed first novel of Louis Begley, who was in his 60s when the book was published in 1991, winning the PEN/Hemingway Award and the Irish Times Aer Lingus Book Prize. Begley's debut work also was nominated for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. It tells the story of a young Jewish boy and his beautiful, acerbic aunt, who manage to stay one step ahead of both the Nazis and their equally vicious, anti-semitic fellow Poles, by posing as Catholics and using other cunning fabrications to avoid being shipped off to the death camps. "Dispatches" author Michael Herr called the book "Intimate, haunting, and beautifully written, a distillation of experience that may be unequalled in the literature of the Holocaust." Book is As New. Not price clipped. Only imperfection is a tiny (less than 1/8") closed tear at very bottom of jacket beneath publisher's symbol. 5 and 7/8" by 8 and 7/8". 198 pages.
