Heinemann, 1898. First edition, first printing. 8vo. 303pp + 16pp ads. First Issue with 16pp of ads dated "Autumn 1897". Grey boards with black lettering to spine & front board. Housed in a bespoke quarter black morocco gilt clamshell case with raised bands. A near fine copy with very clean boards - no marks or rubbing. A hint of toning to spine. Internally complete and clean with old ink name & a few small spots to endpaper. Endpapers original and unsplit. A wonderful copy of this Nineteenth century cornerstone of science fiction. Wells 14. The Human Race is under threat - an army of invading Martians have landed in England; enormous three legged machines are roaming the country incinerating all that stands in their path.
Synopsis
The War of the Worlds (1898) is a science fiction novel by H. G. Wells describing an invasion of late Victorian England by Martians equipped with advanced weaponry. It is a seminal depiction of an alien invasion of Earth. The novel is narrated by an unnamed writer of scientific articles. Throughout the narrative he struggles to reunite with his wife, while witnessing the Martians rampaging through the southern English counties. The plot has been related to invasion literature of the time.
