He was especially impressed by General James Longstreet whom he describes as "one of the ablest generals of the Confederate army." He also gives accounts of various battles including Bull Run, Battle of Bethel, Battle of Manassas, and numerous battles in Missouri including the Battle of Lexington and Wilson's Creek.
