Kurtz (1834-1904), was born and raised in Germany. He went to London after serving in the German army, left to fight in the Crimean War, after which he was a lithographer in London; came to this country when serving on a ship bound for California which was wrecked, but whose crew was saved. He made his way to New York, and opened his gallery on Broadway in 1865. "...WW, in an 1869 notebook, records Kurtz's name and the address of his Madison Square studio; several very striking portraits of WW were done by Kurtz in the 1860s..."-Ed Folsom, Notes on the Major Whitman Photographers, in Walt Whitman Quarterly Review, p. 66,vol. 4, Number 2 1986.
