London: J. Nisbet & Co., 1893. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 5.5". Not Stated. The first edition of this illustrated adventure novel by Ballantyne. The first edition of this work in the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Illustrated with a frontispiece, an illustrated title page, and four plates. Collated, complete. Robert Michael Ballantyne (1825-1894) was a Scottish author known in particular for his juvenile fiction; he also illustrated a number of his own works. His writings were associated with the adventure genre, and include 'The Coral Island', 'The Pirate City', 'Deep Down' and 'The Gorilla Hunters'. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Externally generally smart, though a little faded to the boards, with a couple of small marks to the front board. Light shelf wear to the joints and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot to the first and last couple of pages. Very Good
