Wallpapers By Edward Bawden Printed At The Curwen Press : Special Edition Signed By The Author And Edward Bawden : With Two Extra Wallpaper Specimens
by McKittrick, David
- Used
The sole UK printing published by the Whittington Press, Andoversford in 1989. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. 49 x 33 cm, 20 pages + 4 pages of photographs + 7 large sheets (folded) of original Bawden wallpapers. Number '9' of only 40 special copies of the 'A' issue (from a total edition of only 120 copies), quarter bound in Nigerian goatskin, with gilt titling and the boards covered in a reproduction of part of Edward Bawden's 'Bird's Nest' wallpaper. Very slight markings to the board. What appears to be a light water stain to the lower edges of the boards is in fact printed, as part of the original artwork (John Randle). Internally the book is in clean fine condition. The book has been Signed by both the author and Edward Bawden to the limitation page as called for. Edward Bawden provides an introduction. These wallpapers created between 1927 and 1933 have large scale repeat patterns, and required an oversized book to accommodate the original full sized specimens. The Curwen wallpapers were Bawden's earliest designs in linocuts. For some papers Bawden drew directly on the litho plates with ink and crayon. 'These designs were larger in the repeat than anything previously attempted,' Bawden reminisced, 'and when they hung on a wall looked rather handsome.' Each of the 7 original specimens is tipped to a heavy sheet of brown paper. The 4 full size (approx 23 x 29 inches) wallpapers are 'Tree and Cow,' ' Wood Pigeon', 'Napkin and Fruit', and 'Sahara'. There is a half sheet of 'Knole Park' and quarter sheets of 'Node' and 'Lagoon'. In addition in this special signed edition, there are whole sheets (folded) of 'The Riviera' and 'Facade' papers, which are housed in a separate portfolio. The whole housed in the original publisher's matching slipcase which is lightly marked in places. There were also another 40 copies issued in the 'B' issue without the additional loose wallpaper sheets, and issued in a cloth binding and were unsigned. The remaining 40 copies were the 'C' issue and had no specimens at all. A very handsome production. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
