About This Item
London, c. 1840. Engraved folding race game, 49.5 x 61 cm, dissected into 15 panels and laid on linen, original hand colour, slight adhesion damage affecting central panels and squares 41 and 42, folding into decorative cloth slip-case, gilt, minor wear; lacks rule-book. In the central panel Britannia contemplates the possibilities for the arts and commerce opened up by the railways; the 48 squares around the board depict locomotives, rolling stock, some principal stations of the growing rail network, and the hazards of early rail travel - some more catastrophic than others (pigs on the line, floods, derailment etc). Library Hub records only one UK copy of the game (University of Liverpool library); WorldCat locates 8 copies in North America, some with rules: OCLC: 33894323; OCLC: 177782874; OCLC: 1005884627; OCLC: 80376563.
