Published a year before Julius Nyere's anti-colonial imperative to liberate Tanganyika as a sovereign land in the formation of Tanganyika African National Union in 1954, this impressive collection of colored plates and history points to the "rites of initiation into a secret society...show a finely developed feeling for linear form and for symmetry, and an elaborate use of a few natural paints." Authored by government anthropologist H. Cory. very early Grove title published by Barney Rosset, who acquired Grove in 1951.
