" The Waitara swamp search, represents the first large scale controlled excavation of an artefact-bearing swamp. It has reveled swamps as bona fide archaeological sites of great potential, from the general conclusion that wamps adjacent to centres of pre-historic settlement served as repositories for the curing and seasoning of wooden artefacts on a large and regular scale....The Waitara district, in which the project was carried out in January-February 1960, has proved unique...for the number of carvings recovered during the course of European settlement."
