About This Item
1798 Etching and engraving, 23.5 x 36.5 cm (expertly restored). Strong impression before letters. A view of Jerusalem, from the 3rd volume of "Voyage pittoresque de la Syrie, de la Phoenicie, de la Palestine et de la Basse Égypte" (1798). Engraved by Varin. Between 1784 and 1786, the distinguished French painter and antiquarian Louis François Cassas (1756-1827) embarked on a journey through Egypt, Asia Minor, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and Cyprus, drawing numerous sites that had yet to be documented in print. This monumental pictorial record of his travels was commissioned by Auguste de Choiseul-Gouffier, the French ambassador to the Ottoman Porte.
