About This Item

London; The Hakluyt Society; 1904.. First English Editions; Demy 8vo; Vol. I. pp. xlviii, 320; Vol. II. pp. viii, 555, (4), 31 (prospectus and List of members); 3 large coloured folding maps in pocket at rear of volume II, both uniformly bound in blue cloth, titles lettered in gilt on spines, gilt stamped decoration on upper board, previous owner's bookplate on front endpapers, endpapers a little browned, cloth a little worn and spines darkening, good set. Hakluyt Society, Series II. Volumes XV and XVI. De Quiros obtained royal approval to search for the southern land in1603. After acquiring three vessels and a crew, including Luis Viez de Torres as second-in-command, he set sail for Callao, Peru on 21st December 1605 in the service of the King of Spain. De Quiros sailed west until he reached a fertile island in May 1606 that he named Austrialia del Espiritu Santo. There has been much debate over exactly what he had found but some recent thoughts are that his descriptions accurately fit in with Port Curtis, Gladstone and the adjoining Queensland coast.
