First one-volume collected edition. Contemporary reversed calf, red morocco spine label. Ownership signature of Joshua Baskitt. Title page shaved along foot with loss of part of a line in imprint, minor marginal paper flaws to plates facing 45, 450, 546, 643 (not affecting image). A sound and clean copy. Very good plus to near fine Beddie 19; Hill 18; Forbes 61; Sabin 52455. Large folio measures 16" tall x 10.5" wide. Scarce period leather binding.

Containing a New, Authentic, Entertaining, Full, and Complete History of Captain Cook's First, Second, Third and Last Voyages ... Now Publishing under the immediate Direction of George William Anderson, Esq.


First one volume edition of Cook's voyages, begun soon after the publication of the official account of the Third Voyage and issued in eighty serial parts with plates. The volume also includes accounts of the voyages of Drake, Anson, Byron, Carteret, Phipps, and Wallis. The page of directions to the bookbinder lists the engravings (157 in all) which accompany the text. A few plates are bound out of order; the plate of the Death of Captain Cook, a frequent casualty, is present here at p. 587.
