Antonio de Ulloa and Jorge Juan, two prominent Spanish naval officers, embarked on journey to South America, where they eventually settled exploring from Ecuador to Peru. During this time of exploration, they discovered the metallic element platinum. This journey led them to becoming two of the most important European scientists of the early 18th-century.

They published an account of their expedition, a work that was met with immediate popularity – translated from the original Spanish into English and other European languages. 'A Voyage to South-America' is one of the best Spanish accounts of gold and silver mining in the 18th-century.
