About This Item

New York / Amsterdam: Nico Israel / Da Capo, 1968. Facsimile Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 4to (8" x 10 1/2" ). Pp. [ii], xxxii, 360, 48. (Appendix II; last blank); large folding chart, four double-page charts, three double-page and seven full-page b&w plates; seven full-page natural history plates, two appendices. Simulated vellum. Title continues: " ... in the King George and Queen Charlotte, Captains Portlock and Dixon. Dedicated, by Permission, to Sir Joseph Banks, Bart." Originally published by Geo. Goulding, London, 1789. Copies of the original editions of either Dixon's or Portlock's works are rare, and are priced at several thousand dollars. This is an opportunity to be carried to the Northwest Coast in the late 1790s at little expense. Letters from William Beresford, supercargo of the Queen Charlotte, comprise a substantial aspect of this book; Dixon's work is shown in the valuable charts, the navigational details and the natural history. The expedition carried out important exploration work on the Northwest Coast; their charge was to investigate the burgeoning fur trade. In so doing, they elaborated on Cook's initial charting with much detail, including the discovery of Queen Charlotte Islands, Port Mulgrave and Norfolk Bay. An appendix on the natural history observations made during the voyage is included, representing in part the significant geographic and ethnologic contributions contained herein. Dixon had the good fortune of sailing with Cook on the third voyage; he had the misfortune of meeting Meares on this voyage. A cornerstone of Northwest voyages. Bookseller inventory SADS-TM-DW.
