Parts 1-8 and 10-12 are the "Superior Issue" of 300 copies on Dutch handmade paper (this set unnumbered). Part 9 is from the "regular issue" and is slightly smaller in size. Full page and double page illustrations, rubricated initials, borders and in-text decorations by Aubrey Beardsley in his first major commission. This set is uncut and largely unopened. There is some offsetting from the illustrations to the facing pages, as usual. Part 9 lacks a tiny piece form the spine and has had a nearly invisible repair to the upper wrapper; the wrappers show light soil, rubbing and aging else this is a very good set.

[18] engraved plates total. Volume I: [10], xxix, [2 pp. ad], 432 pp. [7 plates]. Pencil correction to List of Plates (l. A3r). Damp staining to head at gutter. Volume II: [6], 504 pp. [5 plates]. Small perforation to p. 201, text not affected. Large tear p. 323, discreetly repaired with tape [no loss of text]. Volume III: [6], 505 pp., [3 pp. errata, 1 fold-out map]. [6 plates]. Set has been professionally rebacked. Original boards, new spine labels and gilt tooled nautical decoration to compartments, new endpapers. All volumes have wear to calf, bumping to corners, and a few small stains to edges of text blocks. Watermarks to paper with date of 1794. Offsetting from plates. Occasional staining, commensurate with age, but overall in VG condition. Ex libris stamp of Conselheiro Menonca Cortez to half-title of all volumes. This voyage became one of the most important ever made in the interest of geographical knowledge. Vancouver sailed by way of the Cape of Good Hope to Australia, where he discovered King George's Sound and Cape Hood, then to New Zealand, Hawaii, and the northwest coast of America. In three seasons' work, he surveyed the coast of California; visited San Francisco and San Diego, and other Spanish settlements in California; investigated the Strait of Juan de Fuca; discovered the Strait of Georgia; circumnavigated Vancouver Island; and disproved the existence of any passage between the Pacific and Hudson's Bay. (Hill, Pacific Voyages [2004] p. 623).

Second edition with new title page, a re-issue of the 1665 edition sheets. This volume contains the frontispiece, engraved vignettes and initials, (missing Ogilby portrait), and has all eighty-one full-paged plates in fabulous condition. Light yellowing/browning of initial few pages as regular. Volume II--(Second Edition) Aesopics, or a Second Collection of Fables, illustrated with sixty-eight full-paged plates in early issue before captions were added. Pages are remarkably clean without any browning. Large folio volumes, both illustrated throughout; Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677) engraved eighty-eight of the illustrations for these works, the others were executed by Dirck Stoop (c. 1610-1686) and Francis Barlow (c. 1626-1704). Both volumes are uniformly re-bound with original leather panels inset in full brick morocco bindings with gilt titles.

Very nearly the entire edition was lost in a flood, quoting Huntington No. 231. Streeter V-3090, which repeats the flood destruction.Original blue cloth binding with red, black, and gilt lettering and decoration. Title page and author illustration plate detached and tipped in. Some other pages coming unbound but holding for now. Spine darkened and wear at extremities. While a mail carrier in Montana, Frank Grouard was captured by the Sioux, During the six years he was with them he learned their language and was familiar with Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull. Grouard served as a scout for Gen. Crook during the Sioux Campaign of 1876. The author relates not only the personal experiences of Grouard but also his account of events such as the Battle of the Little Bighorn as told to Grouard by participants.
