Princeton University Press, 1959. Hardcover. Near Fine. First Printing . The binding for this volume was designed as a tribute to Peter Gay who died on May 12 , 2015 . VOLTAIRE'S POLITICS was the publication that thrust Gay on the international scene as a major scholar . It was followed by his two volume history of the enlightenment , the first volume of whch won the National Book Award for non-fiction . His interpretation of Voltaire and of the enlightenment in the book offered here broke new ground and his writing style won many devoted readers . This copy is bound in three-quarter leather with marbled paper covered boards , pastedowns , and endpapers . The binding was designed by Lisha Shaver of the Little Mountain Bindery , one of America's most talented young bookbinders . The marbled paper was designed by Ann Muir of Bath , England , widely recognized as the foremost marbler of her generation . The paper used here blends traditional design characteristics with new methods and materials resulting in a striking paper . The interior is clean , no marks except for the inventory number of a previous owner at the bottom corner of the title page .
