Cambridge, Mass.: John Owen, 1940. Second Edition. Very good+ in its original binding which was recently rebacked in 1/4 tan linen and light brown paper covered boards with the original printed paper title label on the spine. The pages are sewn over cords which are laced into the boards. A 16mo of 7 by 4 3/8 inches with an unusual 1" dampness stain in the middle of the front board, an early gift inscription on the first free end page in ink which is repeated in pencil at the upper fore corner of title page and with spots of foxing to the end sheets. The contents are clean and with the exception of a small 1/2" wide by 1/3" deep chip at the upper margin of page 33/34 are undamaged. 144 pages of text being a collection of 40 poems the first 16 of which were written by Longfellow followed by 24 poems translated by Longfellow of much earlier authors of poetry. This copy conforms to the error pointed out in BAL 12065 where Prelude is listed on the contents page as appearing on page v while the number should have read "vii".
Synopsis
Longfellow began publishing his poetry in 1839, including the collection Voices of the Night, his debut book of poetry. The bulk of Voices of the Night was translations, though he also included nine original poems and seven poems that he had written as a teenager. Ballads and Other Poems was published in 1841 and included "The Village Blacksmith" and "The Wreck of the Hesperus", which were instantly popular.
