About This Item

Original cloth with blind-stamped printer's device on front board, and red lettering on front cover and spine. Printer's device on title-page. A sample of American reactions to the Kishinev pogrom of 1903, where Jews were attacked and dozens killed by a Christian mob, while Czarist officials either did nothing or possibly encouraged it. This book also offers a fascinating window on the position of Jews in the United States, showing that Jews did advocate effectively on behalf Russian Jewry, many of whom were now emigrating to the United States in response to pogroms such as Kishinev. Some age wear on binding with spine slightly sunned and minor abrasion on front joint. Shelf wear. Front hinge split. Previous owner's signature on free front endpaper. Lower corner of pages slightly rippled due to damp exposure. Binding in overall good, interior in good+ condition. Cyrus Adler was a leading figure in the 19th and early 20th century American Jewish community as well as an academic scholar. He served as president of Dropsie College in Philadelphia.
