New York: G.P. Putnam, 1855. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 7.5" x 5", 539 pp, with frontis engraving ("The Valley of Unna in Loo Choo"). Bound in publisher's green cloth with blind stamped decoration, gilt spine. Chipping to cloth at spine ends and along front joint, first signature slightly loose, offsetting to two rear blank pages from something once laid in. Binding sound, text clean. Inscribed on the front free endpaper "To James T. Fields, from his friend, Bayard Taylor, New York, Oct. 25, 1855." Fields was partner in one of the leading American literary publishing firms of the nineteenth century, Ticknor and Fields. The firm published Taylor's Poems of Home and Travel the same year (1855) this travel narrative came out, and Fields and Taylor were friends and regular correspondents. A Visit to India, China, and Japan recounts a full year Taylor spent exploring Asia, Most notably, he traveled with the Perry Expedition in Japan for several months.
